What this business takes
This is the business of writing something once and selling it many times: templates, spreadsheets, ebooks, guides, courses and memberships, usually alongside paid freelance writing that funds the early months. It is genuinely cheap to start, with no occupational licence in any state or territory, which is exactly why it is crowded and why most launches earn very little. The hard parts are not technical: they are finding a buyer who already pays for this problem, protecting work you can copy in one click, sales tax that differs in every jurisdiction, and the FTC rules that apply the moment you teach anyone how to make money.
The work behind the launch
- Pick a buyer and prove the demand exists
Do not start with a product idea. Start with a buyer you can name: a job title, an industry and a recurring task. Then go and collect 20 pieces of evidence that this buyer already describes the problem out loud and already pays to solve it: forum threads, Reddit and Facebook group posts, review complaints on competing products, job ads asking for the exact skill, and questions under relevant videos. Paste the actual quotes into the demand log, tagged by the words the buyer uses, because those words become your product page. Then log at least five competitors with their real prices, what is inside, and what their reviews complain about. If you cannot find five competitors, that is usually a sign of no market rather than no competition. Kill the idea now if the evidence is thin; it costs you a week here and six months later.
- Choose the offer shape and the price ladder
Decide what you are actually selling before you build anything: a single template, a bundle, an ebook, a self-paced course, a membership, a service, or a service that leads to a product. Match the shape to the buyer's decision speed. An individual spending their own money buys a low-priced single product on impulse and a course only after they trust you; a business will pay far more but needs invoices, a scope and sometimes a W-9 and a vendor form. Then build a ladder with at least three rungs so the same buyer can spend more than once: an entry product, a bundle or course, and a licence upgrade or done-with-you tier. Write the licence tiers now (personal, commercial, extended, agency multi-seat) because retro-fitting them after launch annoys existing buyers. Price against the competitors you logged, not against a blog post about averages.
- Set up the legal and tax base before the first sale
Register the entity with your state and get a federal EIN, open a separate business bank account, and start bookkeeping from transaction one. Then work the tax question for your own jurisdiction using the licensing row in this room: some states tax your download outright (Colorado, Connecticut, Louisiana since 2025, Maryland, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming, DC), some do not (Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Virginia), some tax your services instead (Hawaii, New Mexico, South Dakota, West Virginia, Texas information services), and some have no sales tax at all (Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon). Register where you must, and write the exact question you still need to ask your agency into the call sheet. Remember that self-employment tax is 15.3 percent on top of income tax and that nobody withholds it from a platform payout.
- Build the smallest complete version
- Own it: copyright, contractors and third-party licences
- Write the licence, refund policy and terms
- Get the claims right: FTC earnings, testimonials and the Business Opportunity Rule
- Build the sales page and the delivery machine
- Launch to people, not to an algorithm
- Run the money: books, sales tax filings and platform reconciliation
- Protect and enforce: piracy, takedowns and platform risk
- Retain, expand and decide what to kill

Your location changes the answer
The Academy offers 56 state and U.S. jurisdiction layers. Depth varies by pathway and location. Federal requirements, state licensing, local use, property approval, professional scope, and payer contracts are different checks.
Use the local requirements desk to identify the responsible authority. Record the service model, actual work address, capacity, workers, and customer type before asking for a ruling. When a record says to call the agency, keep that step open until you have an answer.
Funding is a separate decision. The capital finder links to programs to investigate; eligibility does not equal approval.
