Dropshipping Store: business launch guide

A dropshipping store is an online retail business: you take the order, charge the customer, and a third-party supplier ships the goods straight to the buyer, so you never hold inventory.

What this business takes

A dropshipping store is an online retail business: you take the order, charge the customer, and a third-party supplier ships the goods straight to the buyer, so you never hold inventory. It is genuinely cheap to start and genuinely hard to make money at, because you control none of the things customers judge you on - stock, packaging, transit time, defect rate - while you carry all the legal responsibility for them. The 2025 end of duty-free de minimis treatment removed the cost advantage that most published dropshipping advice was built on, so the version of this business that works in 2026 is a narrow catalog with a vetted supplier, honest shipping windows, and margin that survives duty.

This is an educational preview. Open the pathway and select your state or jurisdiction to inspect its source records and unresolved questions. A published learning room is not a declaration that your business is licensed or ready to open.

The work behind the launch

  1. Pick the category before you pick a product

Most dropshipping stores fail at this step and never recover. Choose one category where you can answer three questions in writing: who specifically buys this, what problem does it solve, and why would they buy it from you rather than the marketplace listing that is already ranking. Reject categories that are regulated in ways you cannot carry: children's products and toys pull you into CPSC certification as the importer, cosmetics and supplements pull in FDA labelling, electronics pull in FCC marking, and anything battery-powered creates shipping restrictions. Reject categories where the supplier's product is obviously a branded knockoff, because an intellectual property complaint can end your store, your ad accounts and your payment processing in the same week. Write a one-page category brief and keep it, because every later decision gets tested against it.

  2. Vet suppliers by buying from them, not by reading their page

A supplier directory listing proves nothing. Shortlist three suppliers for the same two or three products and place real sample orders from each, paying retail, shipping to a residential address. Record for each: the date you ordered, the date a tracking number appeared, the date it actually arrived, the carrier, what the packaging looked like, whether the item matched the listing photos, and whether any invoice or competing branding was in the box. Ask each supplier in writing what happens on a defect, who pays return shipping, what their stockout notification is, and whether they will ship without their own marketing inserts. A supplier who will not answer those in writing is not a supplier, it is a risk. Keep the samples; they are your photography subjects and your evidence.

  3. Compute landed cost with duty in it, then set prices

This is the module that decides whether the business is real. Landed cost per SKU is product cost plus supplier shipping plus duty plus payment processing plus an allowance for refunds and chargebacks. Duty is not optional any more: Executive Order 14324 suspended duty-free de minimis treatment for all countries for goods entered on or after August 29, 2025, CBP's interim final rule effective June 24, 2026 made the suspension indefinite for non-postal modes, and Congress repealed the statutory exemption effective July 1, 2027. Postal shipments face either an ad valorem duty at the origin country's IEEPA rate or a per-item specific duty. If you do not know your product's tariff classification, you do not know your cost, so ask a licensed customs broker rather than guessing. Price from landed cost upward and discard any SKU that cannot carry it.

  4. Publish a shipping window you can actually hit, and build the delay notice now
  5. Set up refunds so they are faster than the complaint
  6. Form the business and get the money plumbing right
  7. Register for sales tax where you must, and nowhere else
  8. Use marketplace facilitator law deliberately, not accidentally
  9. Get resale certificates in place so you are not taxed twice
  10. Screen every product for safety and restriction before it goes live
  11. Advertise inside the FTC pricing and endorsement rules
  12. Prove the unit, then scale the channel

Your location changes the answer

The Academy offers 56 state and U.S. jurisdiction layers. Depth varies by pathway and location. Federal requirements, state licensing, local use, property approval, professional scope, and payer contracts are different checks.

Use the local requirements desk to identify the responsible authority. Record the service model, actual work address, capacity, workers, and customer type before asking for a ruling. When a record says to call the agency, keep that step open until you have an answer.

Funding is a separate decision. The capital finder links to programs to investigate; eligibility does not equal approval.

Official sources to start with

These links come from the pathway's source ledger. The dates below are the dates recorded there, not a claim that every requirement was reverified today. Open the current agency page before filing, paying, or committing to a property.
